Car Insurance

Car Insurance Image

Also called vehicle or auto insurance, car insurance is financial protection for you against physical damage or bodily injury resulting from traffic collisions and against liability that could arise from incidents in a vehicle. Car insurance is insurance for cars, SUV’s, trucks and other road vehicles.  It’s a contractual agreement between you, the insured, and the insurer (or the car insurance company).

Everyone who owns, leases, or borrows a vehicle should invest in a car insurance policy. A well-rounded insurance policy provides more protection and assurance when you are on the go, meaning that you can feel secure that your finances are covered even if something unexpected occurs.

Who should get car insurance?

Everyone who owns, leases, or borrows a vehicle should invest in a car insurance policy. The minimum will offer you basic coverage, but a well-rounded insurance policy provides more protection and assurance when you are on the go, meaning that you can feel secure that your finances are safe even if something goes wrong.

What additional car insurance does for you

The right car insurance ultimately protects you and your passengers. Car insurance also covers damage to your vehicle from something other than a collision like weather or theft.

If you’re ever at fault in an accident, you may be required to pay costs associated with it, such as legal fees, an injured person’s medical costs, or even lost income if they are unable to work. Insurance can cover these costs, and without adequate insurance in place, you may be responsible for paying these yourself.

In Saskatchewan, some car insurance policies may also cover medical expenses for you and your passengers, including fees associated with doctor’s visits, surgery, or hospitalization. We can chat with you about coverage options that will help with these types of expenses.

Do you have enough coverage?
Let's find out

The difference between plates and a policy

Plate insurance is automatically provided when you register a vehicle in Saskatchewan. The insurance included with your plate for private passenger registered vehicles is $200,000 third party liability with a $700 deductible for limited physical damage.

Depending on the severity of an accident or in cases of being sued, $200,000 will likely not be enough to cover all costs. A car insurance policy covers a wider range of situations, additional costs you may incur, and can lower your deductible.

The benefits of having a car insurance policy compared to basic plate insurance

Basic plate insurance provides car owners in Saskatchewan with the mandatory minimum coverage required to operate a vehicle. A car insurance policy extends coverage and can reduce any additional out-of-pocket costs with some great benefits.

There are several options to purchase for your car insurance policy, and our brokers will work with you to determine the best-tailored program to fit your needs.  Some coverages to choose from include (but are not limited to):

  • Lower deductibles
  • Increased liability coverage
  • Road hazard glass coverage
  • Loss of use protection
  • Replacement Cost Coverage

What car insurance does not cover in Saskatchewan

  • Breakdowns

The cost of car insurance in Saskatchewan

In Saskatchewan, about $350 annually is the average cost of an extension auto policy, but car insurance rates depend on several factors like the coverage you take out or the deductible you select.

For example, choosing a higher deductible can help lower your premiums. And a record of past claims, choosing a lower deductible, or including optional coverages will increase it.

Choosing a $500 deductible on collision and comprehensive coverages with $2 million in liability, you would likely pay below the average in Saskatchewan depending on some of the other factors above.

Understanding deductibles

A car insurance deductible is the cost you pay out of pocket when a claim is submitted before car insurance companies in Saskatchewan contribute the rest. These are up-front costs that you are responsible for if an accident or another claim happens.

You get to select the deductibles for your coverage, but you should choose a reasonable deductible given the coverages you need and your financial situation. If you can afford to pay more out of pocket, then you may want to consider a higher deductible.

Factors that affect the cost of car insurance in Saskatchewan

There are several factors that can increase or decrease car insurance costs in Saskatchewan. To determine your exact cost of insurance you can contact one of our Personal Lines Account Executives by phone or in-office to provide you with a quote or access our online quoting option through ArrowQuote.

Factors that increase the cost of car insurance

Several factors increase the cost of your car insurance policy such as choosing a lower deductible which increases the overall cost of your premium.

Your premium will also cost more if you have a history of traffic accidents, tickets, violations, or at-fault claim.

Factors that increase the cost of car insurance

Drivers that have established a clean and safe driving record are more likely to have lower premiums. Your premium is also likely to be lower if you are a “pleasure use” driver and don’t use your vehicle for business. If you have multiple policies with the same insurance company, such as both your home and car insurance, you may be eligible for discounts for your loyalty.

Submitting a car insurance claim with Knight Archer

Every car insurance company requires you to go through similar steps to file your claim. Here’s what you can expect with us.

Collect information to have on hand. Being prepared will make the process go much faster. Taking a photo or a video of the damage can be helpful in case the insurance company asks for evidence.

Call your insurer as soon as possible. There’s no such thing as too soon - you can even call from the scene of the accident.

Your insurance company will tell you what documents you need to fill out to support your claim, typically a “proof of claim” form. If you filled out a police report at the scene of the accident, you might also need this.

Determine if your claim has critical deadlines. Depending on what policy you have, there may be a deadline. Know your deductibles and review them with your insurer.

Let your insurer know if you need a rental car - they’ll tell you if it’s covered under your policy.

After reviewing the materials you’ve provided, and possibly bringing your car for assessment, your insurer will give you an estimate.

Complete the claim estimate and repairs needed.

Saskatchewan Car Insurance FAQs

Will my coverage extend to rentals and in the United States?

Yes, your coverage extends into the 50 continental United States and the rest of Canada. It will not extend to traveling in Europe or Mexico.

Will car insurance cover my belongings if my car is stolen?

No, it will not. Your car insurance only covers the vehicle itself.

Will I have wildlife coverage?

Coverage for wildlife is only included if you have both the collision and comprehensive perils included on the policy. If so, your deductible is waived.

Am I covered for road hazard glass?

Road hazard glass is optional insurance that many drivers choose to purchase as an add-on, and it covers you as an example if another vehicle tosses up a rock and breaks your window. If you buy comprehensive coverage, damage to glass that is caused by circumstances outside your control is covered. These circumstances include but are not limited to windstorms, hail, fire, vandalism, and theft.

If I get in an accident, will my insurance provide coverage to rent a vehicle while mine is getting repaired?

If you have purchased a loss of use coverage, yes, your policy will provide coverage to rent a vehicle while yours is being repaired and that cost will be covered up to the limit selected on the policy.

Are my children or spouse covered under my vehicle insurance if they drive my vehicle?

Yes. Anyone may be covered as long as they are legally licensed to drive and given consent.
